New Graphic Novels

By Matt Wolfbauer

Tabletop role-playing games are undergoing a major resurgence. People are getting together and discovering everything that RPGs have to offer. The show “Critical Role” is one of the big sources of inspiration. “Critical Role” is a show where a group of voice actors get together and play Dungeons and Dragons. The show started in 2015 and is now the most-watched Dungeons and Dragons livestream. In recent years, they have started releasing issues of comics telling the stories of their characters.

“Vox Machina Origins” follows a group of adventurers that must navigate through a magical and  dangerous world in order to survive. What makes this story so unique is how these original stories came about: a bunch of friends sitting at a table and playing a game. The characters are written based on hundreds of hours of actors playing them. The best part is that you don’t need prior knowledge of these characters to enjoy them. On their own, these graphic novels are some of the strongest stories from the past few years.

In their first issue, these adventurers have been masterfully developed on paper by Matthew Mercer and Matthew Colville. The issue features beautiful art from Olivia Samson. Here, we meet most of the adventuring group known as Vox Machina. We see them come together to fight against some unknown evil in a small town. They have also been conveniently produced as larger graphic novels. There are currently two volumes out now with a third one being released soon. . The new issue  will be hitting stores on Wednesdays. If you are a fan of fantasy adventure, I highly recommend you check out “Vox Machina Origins.”
